Practical hints
E Recharge the removed battery. Ob-
serve the notes in the Operating In-
structions for your battery charger.
E Reinstall the battery in the reverse or-
der.
! Only charge the installed battery using a
tested and approved battery charger. These de-
vices allow you to charge the battery while it is
installed. The vehicle's electronics system may
otherwise be damaged.
i It is also possible to charge the starter bat-
tery using the jump-starting connection point in
the engine compartment (e page 270).
E Switch off all electrical consumers.
! Always reconnect the battery in the de-
scribed order. Never interchange the connection
terminals. You could otherwise damage the vehi-
cle's electrics.
E Connect the positive terminal and se-
cure the cover.
E Connect the negative terminal.
i After reconnecting the battery, you must re-
set the side windows (
e page 66) and the sliding
sunroof (
e page 67).
If the starter battery in the battery case in
the driver's footwell is discharged, the en-
gine can be jump-started from another ve-
hicle using jump leads. For this purpose,
the vehicle is equipped with a jump-start-
ing connection point.
The auxiliary battery in the engine com-
partment is not suitable for jump-starting
operations. Only use the jump-starting
connection point in the engine compart-
ment if you require jump-starting assis-
tance or wish to provide jump-starting
assistance.
! Avoid repeated and lengthy starting at-
tempts.
Never start the vehicle using a rapid battery
charger.
Please note:
O jump-starting must be performed when
the engine and catalytic converter are
cold.
O do not start the engine if the battery
has frozen. Let the battery thaw out
first.
O only use a battery of the same rated
voltage and of approximately the same
capacity for jump-starting.
O only use jumper cables of adequate
cross-section with insulated battery
terminal clamps.
Recharging the battery
G Warning
Only charge the battery in well-ventilated ar-
eas. As the battery is being charged, gases
can escape and generate minor explosions,
which can injure you and others and may
cause damage to the paintwork or permit
acid corrosion on the vehicle.
During the charge procedure, there is a risk
of acid burns due to gases escaping from the
battery. Do not, therefore, lean over the bat-
tery while it is being recharged.
