Controls in detail
Light switch between driver's door and
steering wheel
1 Light switch
à Automatic headlamp control
$ Lights off/Constant headlamp

T Parking lamps, license plate and
instrument lighting on
L Low-beam/high-beam headlamps
on (depending on the position of
the combination switch)
Low-beam headlamps
E Turn the key to position 1 in the igni-
tion lock.
E Turn the light switch to L.
The L indicator lamp in the instru-
ment cluster lights up.
Constant headlamp mode
You can set constant headlamp mode on
or off:
O on vehicles without steering wheel but-
tons (
e page 85)
O on vehicles with steering wheel buttons
(e page 94)
This does not apply to countries in which
there is a legal requirement to use con-
stant headlamp mode.
E Turn the light switch to $.
The low-beam headlamps, parking
lamps and license plate lamp are
switched on when the engine is
running.
The L indicator lamp in the instru-
ment cluster lights up.
i USA only:
If you turn the light switch to T or L, the
corresponding light switches on. Constant head-
lamp mode remains activated if the light switch
is turned to Ã.
i Canada only:
If you turn the light switch to L, the low-
beam headlamps are switched on. Constant
headlamp mode remains activated if the light
switch is turned to T or Ã.
Automatic headlamp control
The parking lamps, low-beam headlamps
and license plate lamp are switched on au-
tomatically when the brightness of ambi-
ent light falls below a predetermined level.
G Warning
The lamp failure monitor is only an aid. You
are responsible for making sure that the vehi-
cle lighting is functioning correctly at all
times.
Please therefore check the condition and
working order of the lighting equipment of
your vehicle and, if applicable, of the trailer
before each drive.
Light switch
G Warning
If the light switch is at Ã:
O the headlamps could switch off tempo-
rarily due to extreme glare, e.g. from on-
coming traffic
O the lights do not switch on automatically
in foggy conditions.
