Battery isolating switch

Operation
Please note the following points:
O dirty terminal clamps and battery con-
tacts cause current drain, which lead to
the batteries discharging. Always keep
the terminal clamps and battery con-
tacts clean and dry. Lightly grease the
terminal clamps, particularly the under-
sides, with acid-proof grease.
O cleaning agents containing petroleum
corrode the battery housing. Only clean
with commercially available cleaning
agents.
O only clean the battery casing with the
cell caps screwed in. Otherwise, dirt
could get into the battery cells.
O the vent holes in the cell caps must be
unobstructed and the cell ventilation
hoses must not be blocked. Otherwise,
gas cannot escape. Unscrew the cell
caps and clean blocked vent holes with
a suitable implement, e.g. a piece of
wire. You must unscrew the cell caps
first. There is otherwise a risk of a short
circuit.
O check the terminal clamps and the fas-
tening of the negative cable to the
chassis at regular intervals to ensure
that they are correctly seated.
O batteries which are out of use should
be recharged once a month.
You can disconnect the current to all your
vehicle's consumers by using the battery
isolating switch. This will prevent uncon-
trolled battery discharge caused by quies-
cent current consumption.
i Only disconnect the vehicle electrical sys-
tem from the power supply by using the battery
isolating switch if the vehicle is to be parked up
for a long period or if this is absolutely neces-
sary. After the power supply is switched on, you
must reset the side windows (
e page 66) and
the sliding sunroof (e page 67).

side next to the accelerator pedal
! Make sure that the key is in position 0 in the
ignition lock and wait at least 20 seconds before
disconnecting or connecting the battery isolat-
ing switch. You could otherwise damage electri-
cal system components.

G Warning
If the vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary
battery in the engine compartment, it is nec-
essary to disconnect both batteries when
working on the vehicle electrical system. Only
then is the electrical system fully disconnect-
ed from the power supply.
