Controls in detail
Accelerator pedal position
Your style of driving influences how the au-
tomatic transmission shifts gears:
O Little throttle: early upshifts
O More throttle: later upshifts
Kickdown
Use kickdown for maximum acceleration.
E Depress the accelerator pedal beyond
the pressure point.
The automatic transmission shifts to
the next gear down, depending on the
engine speed.
E Release the accelerator pedal as
soon as the desired speed has been
reached.
The automatic transmission shifts up
again.
Stopping
If you are only stopping briefly:
E Leave the selector lever in the drive po-
sition.
E Secure the vehicle against rolling away
by using the brake pedal.
Maneuvering
Maneuvering in a tight space:
E Control the speed by braking carefully.
E Accelerate only slightly and avoid jolt-
ing.
i For rapid maneuvering (e.g. to rock the vehi-
cle out of snow or slush), you can shift back and
forth between drive position D and reverse
gear R at low speeds without applying the
brakes.
Trailer towing
E Run the engine in the moderate engine
speed range on steep uphill gradients.
E Depending on the uphill or downhill
gradient, shift down to shift range 3 or
2 (
e page 109), even if cruise control is
switched on.
Working on the vehicle
Driving tips
G Warning
Apply the handbrake before working on the
vehicle and shift the automatic transmission
into parking position P.
The vehicle could otherwise roll away.

G Warning
Only use the climate control system when
road and traffic conditions permit. You will
otherwise be unable to observe road and traf-
fic conditions and could cause an accident
and injure yourself and others.
