72 THE HASSELBLAD MANUAL
Locking Exposure Values in the Spot Metering Mode
In the Spot metering mode, there is another way to lock lens settings without the need for
relocking the exposure after each picture. This is done by programming custom option SPOT
MODE into the camera. Follow these steps:
1. Set the camera to CUSTOM OPTIONS. Turn the front wheel to SPOT MODE.
2. Turn the rear wheel so the display shows ZONE (not NORMAL) at the bottom.
3. Lock the setting by pressing the ISO/WB (Drive) button.
4. You now take the meter reading by pointing the spot meter area at the part of the subject that
you want to measure. Press the AE Lock, which sets and locks the setting and shows ZONE 5 on
the display and viewfi nder. Re-compose and take the picture.
5. Proceed the same way for the next picture. If desired, you can place the reading into a different
zone — for example, Zone 7 for a reading of white snow — by turning the rear control wheel. You
can also point the spot meter area with the locked setting at other subject areas. The display then
shows the deviation in zone values so that you know the difference in subject brightness. For exam-
ple, a Zone 4 reading indicates that the new area is one EV value darker. If you want to use the spot
meter without this locking approach, set the SPOT MODE to NORMAL (the default setting).
Exposure Compensations
To make all the exposures somewhat darker or lighter in Manual or Automatic Exposure
mode, you can program an exposure compensation from –5 to 5 EV values into the camera.
Proceed as follows:
1. Press the Exposure Compensation button (item 4, Figure 4-1) on the viewfi nder.
2. Turn the front or rear control wheel until the desired adjustment value is visible on the display.
3. Press the ISO/WB (Drive) button. The adjusted value is visible in the viewfi nder with a or –
indication.
4. Click the Exposure Compensation button on the fi nder, and set the value to zero if you no
longer want the compensation, or as a shortcut to setting the value to zero, press the AF button.
You can also input a temporary exposure adjustment in any of the automatic modes by turning
the rear wheel with the amount of the adjustment shown on the scale in the viewfi nder LCD
display. It can be programmed as a fi xed adjustment by setting custom option AE LOCK and
QUICK ADJUST to SAVED.
Exposure Bracketing in Digital Imaging
In digital imaging, the exposure obtained with a specifi c lens setting can be seen on the his-
togram and on the display screen and can be adjusted immediately. The Bracketing mode is
seldom used, but it is still an important control in fi lm photography.
Manual Exposure Bracketing
In the Manual exposure (M) setting, you can bracket exposures by changing either the aper-
ture or the shutter speed manually. The deviation from normal exposure is shown on the dis-
play and in the viewfi nder with a or value adjustment.
