START-UP PROCEDURE
Brake Check
A Neutral Start feature has been installed for safety.
The grader will not start unless the FNR pedal is in the
neutral position. It is recommended that operators
always check the brake before operating.
Verify there are no people, obstacles
or other equipment in the machine’s path before
starting the engine.
Be sure the park brake is engaged
and the FNR pedal is in the neutral position before
starting the engine. DO NOT put your foot on the
FNR pedal when starting.
To check that the park brake is functioning properly:
1. Engage the park brake. (Figure 4-2)
2. Step on the foot brake pedal. (Figure 4-1)

3. Turn the ignition key to the START position. The
engine should not start unless the FNR pedal is in
NEUTRAL (center position).
If the engine starts with the FNR pedal in
either FORWARD or REVERSE, contact your
authorized dealer immediately for service. DO
NOT drive the grader until repaired.
The FNR pedal is very sensitive. Use
only a little pressure on the pedal when moving
in forward or reverse to prevent lunging. DO NOT
engage FNR pedal before releasing park brake.
Starting the Engine
ALWAYS fasten your seat belt and
adjust steering console, seat and mirrors BEFORE
starting the engine.
To start the 685D Motor Grader:
1. Ensure the park brake is engaged. (Figure 4-2)
2. Fasten seat belt, adjust steering console, seat
position and mirrors.
3. Place the FNR pedal into the NEUTRAL position.
(Figure 4-1)
4. Ensure the throttle is in the idle position (completely
rearward). Check control panel gauges for proper
readings.
5. Insert key into the ignition and turn clockwise to the
ON position. (Figure 4-2)
The PV485 digital controller on the steering
control console (described on the following
pages) will “boot” for a few seconds when
starting the engine. A “Wait to Start” banner will
appear for a few seconds while booting. AFTER
the Wait to Start light disappears, turn key to the
START position to crank engine.
DO NOT hold the starter longer than
10 - 15 seconds. If the engine does not start, allow
the starter to cool two or three minutes between
attempts to prevent damage to the starter.
The engine is equipped with an
electric heat starting system. Using start additives,
such as ether, is not recommended as it could cause
an explosion resulting in severe injury and/or engine
damage.
6. Check control panel gauges for proper readings.
7. Allow the engine to idle a few minutes before moving
in either direction.
A safety sensor system in the seat
detects whether the operator is properly seated.
The grader will remain in neutral and will not move
forward or reverse, despite movement of the FNR
pedal, if the operator is not seated.
