Spreading and Leveling
The 685D Motor Grader can also be used for spreading,
leveling, planing and side casting material. Graders
have less power and traction than dozers, but can move
the loads faster. The moldboard blade is lower and
more concave, which gives the grader increased rolling
action of the load so more material is pushed without
spilling over the top.
NOTE: Do not pile windrows in front of the rear
wheels because it will adversely affect
traction and grader control.
If there is space to work around the sides of the
windrows, extend the blade well to the side and
reduce the windrow using a series of side cuts.
Leveling large windrows may require two or more side
cuts.

You can also use articulation and lean the wheels
slightly to move and spread large windrows:
Angle the moldboard blade toward the windrow,
tilting it forward slightly. Be sure the moldboard is
positioned high enough above the surface to obtain
the desired depth.
Lean the front wheels slightly in the opposite direction
to overcome side thrust.
Planing
Set the blade at an angle to “plane off” irregular surfaces
and use that material to ll hollows:
1. Cut enough material to keep some in front of the
blade, moving the loosened material forward to
distribute it evenly.
2. On the next pass, pick up the windrow left from the
trailing edge of the blade.
3. On the nal pass, make a lighter cut and lift the
trailing edge of the blade enough to allow surplus
material to under rather than around the end to
avoid leaving a ridge.

Sidecasting
The side casting technique is often used for lling
ditches, shaping and road maintenance.
To shape and maintain most roads, the moldboard
blade should be at an angle of 25 - 30 degrees.
Decrease the angle for spreading windrows.
Increase the angle for hard cuts and ditching.
1. Angle the moldboard blade so the load being
pushed at the toe rolls off the heel. This rolling
action assists side movement.
2. Move forward, side casting the material into the
ditch.
3. Make the passes necessary to compact the ll.
