Scarifiers
Scariers strong enough to penetrate material too hard
for the moldboard blade to cut or spread are available
that can be mounted on the front or rear of the grader.
Scarier “teeth” shanks “rip” and loosen earth, gravel,
and similar surfaces. After “scarifying” compacted or
hard material, the operator can then use the moldboard
to grade and reshape the road surface.
The rear-mounted scarier option features nine large,
replaceable teeth. (Figure 4-43)

The front scarier option also features nine replaceable
teeth mounted on a plow-shaped plate. (Figure 4-44)

A front blade-mounted, ip-down scarier option offers
the convenience of using either component at the front
of the grader. (Figure 4-45) If the job needs scarifying
operations, mount the attachment with the scarier side
down. Or “ip” attachment the other direction and mount
on the nose plate to use the dozer blade.

Keep these items in mind when using a scarier:
• Be sure to drive in a straight line when the scarier is
in the ground to avoid breaking the teeth.
• The proper way to reshape a dirt road with ruts
and potholes is to scarify its surface to the depth
of the depressions to break up all the compacted
surrounding surface.
• To control dust, especially on a dirt road, wet the
surface. This also helps supporting the binding of
ll material if the dirt road will be compacted after
grading.
• To scarify extremely hard or compacted material,
remove alternate scarier teeth. DO NOT remove
more than ve teeth as the force against the
remaining teeth could shear them off.
NEVER make sharp turns or articulate
with scarier teeth in the ground. DO NOT drag the
scarier teeth along hard surfaces such as pavement
or large rocks. Damage or bent/broken teeth can
occur.
Scarify down the slope for better
stability whenever possible. If scarifying or ripping
across a slope, keep the moldboard parallel with the
front axle, extended toward the downhill side, and
lowered close to the ground to provide protection
against rolling over.
