MOTOR GRADER TERMS
To understand techniques and applications discussed
on the following pages, an understanding of grading
terms is essential:
Moldboard Blade: The moldboard blade is attached
the bottom of the moldboard. This is what makes
contact with the surface.
Moldboard Toe: This is the leading end of the
moldboard closest to the front wheels. (Figure 4-34)
Moldboard Heel: This is the trailing end of the
moldboard farthest from the front wheels.
Moldboard Angle: The angle of the moldboard as
measured from the moldboard toe to the center line of
the front frame.
Moldboard Pitch: Tilting the top of the moldboard
forward or backward from its vertical position is pitch.
Moldboard Side Shift: The moldboard can be shifted
outward up to three (3) feet right or left.
Turntable (Circle): This is the circular part of motor
grader located under the frame. The turntable (or circle)
rotates, which moves the moldboard blade left and right.
Windrow: This is the ridge of loose material, also known
as a berm, that pushes to the side while grading.
Crown: This is the process of building up the middle
part of a road bed so water will drain to the sides. This is
especially important for road maintenance projects.
Scarify: This term means loosening or ripping up
the grading surface. The 685D Motor Grader offers
scarier optional attachments that mount on the front or
rear of the grader.
