Playing Sounds
of
the PR-300
The PR-300 has 317 high quality sounds which can
be
used to create many different styles
of
music. In this
section, we'll show you how to play PR-300 sounds from another MIDI device, such as a Rodgers organ
or
MIDI keyboard.
We'll also tell you about the different ways that sounds can
be selected.

Module
The PR-300 is equipped with a high resolution sound generator
which produces many great sounding instruments
and
effects
(you've already heard some
of
them
by
listening to the
demo
disk). This sound generator conforms to both the new General
MIDI Specification and the new GS
Format
MIDI uses 16 different channels to communicate. Each
of
these
channels can be used to control a different sound.
When
the
PR-300
is
connected
to
a
MIDI
synthesizer
or
keyboard (such as the Rodgers C-100
or
C-220), each
of
the 16
MIDI channels can be used to control EITHER a PR-300 sound
or
a sound in the MIDI keyboard.
So that the resources
of
both the PR-300 and the MIDI keyboard
can be utilized, some
of
the 16 MIDI channels are designated for
PR-300
use
only,
and
some
of
the
16
MIDI
channels
are
designated for MIDI keyboard use only.
For example, when the PR-300 is connected to a Rodgers organ,
some MIDI channels are used to control
PR-300
sounds
and
some MIDI channels are used to control the organ's sounds.
To use the resources
of
both instruments together, the PR-300
must
be
told which
of
the 16
MIDI
channels will
be
used to
control the PR-300's internal sounds and which will
be
used to
control sounds in an external MIDI instrument (such as a MIDI
keyboard
or
Rodgers organ).
GENERAL
mlill
Channels Common
Use
These channel assignments are determined
by
two switches
on
the PR-300; one determines how channels 1-10 will
be
used, the
other how channels 11-16 are used. Each
of
these two groups
of
MIDI channels can be set to "External"
or
"Internal".
If
a group
of
MIDI channels is set to "External", then those channels will
be
used
to
control
external
equipment.
If
the
group
is
set
to
"Internal", then the channels will be used to control the internal
sounds
of
the PR-300.
