Configuration Guide ERSPAN Configuration
ERSPAN Configuration
This chapter describes the ERSPAN configuration of Ruijie devices.
Overview
ERSPAN (Encapsulated Remote Switched Port Analyzer) is the expansion of
RSPAN (Remote Switched Port Analyzer). For normal RSPAN, the mirrored
data packets can be only transmitted at Layer 2, so that they are unable to pass
through the routable network; while the ERSPAN can transmit the mirrored
packets in routable networks.
ERSPAN performs the functions that encapsulate all mirrored packets into IP
packets through a GRE tunnel and then route the IP packets to the destination
port of the remote mirroring device. The typical application topology is shown
below:
Figure 1 Typical ERPSAN application topology
Figure 1 illustrates two roles:
Source switch: where the encapsulated remote mirroring source ports are. The
source swith copies the packets of source ports and forwards the packets using
the GRE-encapsulated IP packets to the destination switch.
Destination switch: where the encapsulated remote mirroring destination ports
are. The destination switch forwards the GRE-decapsulated mirrored packets
that are received to the monitoring device via the mirroring destination port.
To realize the ERSPAN, the GRE-encapsulated IP packets must be able to be routed
to the destination mirroring device in the network.
