Controls in detail
E Press the & or * button repeat-
edly until the number or the name you
are looking for is displayed.
E Press the 6 button.
The operating system dials the select-
ed phone number.
If a connection is made, you will see the
call duration and the name of the per-
son you are calling if stored in the
phone book. Otherwise, the number
you are dialing continues to be dis-
played.
Visual check of the vehicle exterior
E In particular, check the following com-
ponents on the vehicle, and on the trail-
er as necessary:
O license plates, vehicle lighting, turn
signals and brake lamps, wiper
blades for dirt and damage
O tires and wheels for firm seating,
correct tire pressure and general
condition
O trailer tow hitch for play and that it
is securely fastened
i The trailer tow hitch is one of the most im-
portant items on the vehicle with regard to road
safety. The separate instructions issued by the
trailer tow hitch manufacturer pertaining to oper-
ation, care and maintenance should be ob-
served.
E Rectify any noticeable defects before
commencing the journey.
Checks in the vehicle
Emergency equipment/first aid kit
The equipment for first aid and breakdown
assistance is located in the stowage com-
partment of the driver's/co-driver's door
and behind the driver's seat.
E Check the equipment to make sure
that it is accessible, complete and
ready to use.
Vehicle lighting
E Turn the key to position 2 in the igni-
tion lock.
E Check with the help of another person
that the lights are clean and working
correctly, including turn signals and
brake lamps.
E Replace defective bulbs (e page 244).

G Warning
Pedal movement must not be obstructed. The
vehicle's operating and road safety are other-
wise jeopardized.
Objects could fall and get caught between
the pedals if you accelerate or brake sudden-
ly. You will no longer be able to brake or ac-
celerate. You could cause an accident, which
could result in injury to yourself and others.
O If floor mats and carpets are used, make
sure that these are secured correctly and
cannot slip and that there is sufficient
pedal clearance.
O Do not place any objects in the driver's
footwell.
O Store and secure all loose objects so they
cannot get into the driver's footwell while
the vehicle is in motion.
G Warning
The doors could open of their own accord
while the vehicle is in motion if they are not
fully closed. For this reason, please make
sure that all the doors are properly closed
and locked before driving off (
e page 56).
