Operating 503 and Other V System Cameras 171
Figure 9-10 The release lock. (1) Set to T; the release lock in earlier 500 models keeps the
auxiliary shutter open until the lever is moved back to 0. (2) EL models have a release lock
on the side of the battery compartment with the operating position 0 in the center, a release
lock L to prevent accidental releasing at the top, and a lock T for time exposures at the
bottom. (3) Superwide cameras have the release lock next to the release.
when a cable release is used. Older SLR Hasselblad types also have a release lock, to be used
as described above for the Superwide.
The EL Camera Release
All ELmodels are released by electrical contact, not by mechanical means, with a release but-
ton or an FK release cable that can be inserted in either one of the two openings at the front.
Some EL models come equipped with the large square release button that has been used
by astronauts in the past. It is removable, and when removed, the camera has the same two
release openings. On the 555ELD, the release button must be inserted in the lower opening
for photography with fi lm.
All EL models can also be released through the side socket at the rear of the camera using
an SK release cord. EL cameras have a release lock lever on the battery compartment that is
operated as explained in Figure 9-10. Do not use the lock for time exposures. Pre-release the
camera and use release cables.
Operating the 201F Camera
On the 201F focal plane shutter camera without metering system shown in Figure 9-11 you
can lock the shutter speed setting by pushing forward the locking knob above the battery
compartment. The built-in self-timer can be programmed for a 2-second delay by pushing the
Mirror Lock-Up control twice or pushing it once for a 10-second delay. The ASA dial on the
side is used with dedicated fl ash and is used like the control on the 500 models. The battery is
checked by turning the shutter speed ring to the battery symbol position as shown in Figure
9-12. The ready light of the dedicated fl ash system in the viewfi nder lights up, or gets brighter
if already lit, if the battery is in good condition.
Special Operating Controls on 2000/2003 Camera Models
The 2000/2003 cameras have a few unique operating controls. The mirror motion is adjust-
able so that the mirror returns instantly, returns when the fi lm is advanced, or remains locked
in the upper position; a permanent mirror lock up (see Figure 9-13). Moving the lever above
the battery compartment from O to L locks the shutter speed setting as shown in Figure 9-14.
