Chapter 10. Administration - Physical Tab 277
Draft Document for Review March 28, 2011 12:24 pm 7914Admin_Physical.fm
The DS3500 storage subsystem has two management Ethernet ports per controller. Use one
Ethernet port for daily management of your DS3500 storage subsystem. Reserve the other
port for use by service personnel or for subsystem monitoring hardware that may be available
in the future.
The default IP addresses of the first management Ethernet ports are:
ň° Controller A: 192.168.128.101
ň° Controller B: 192.168.128.102
The default IP addresses of the second management Ethernet ports are:
ň° Controller A: 192.168.129.101
ň° Controller B: 192.168.129.102
10.7.1 Initial settings for default IP addresses in DS Storage Manager
In order to change the default IP addresses, first you must connect to the DS3500 storage
subsystem. Perform the following steps:
1. Connect the Ethernet ports to an isolated Ethernet switch.
2. Set the IP address in your management machine to match the default IP address subnet
on the DS3500 storage subsystem. (It means 192.168.128.xxx)
3. Connect the management machine to the same Ethernet switch.
4. Use the Storage Manager client interface to change the IP addresses on both controllers:
a. Start the Storage Manager client interface. First, DS Storage Manager - Enterprise
Management window opens (see also details in Chapter 6, âAdministration - Enterprise
Managementâ on page 161.
Select the autodiscovery icon or menu Tools ďŽ Automatic Discovery. If this is the
first time you are using the Storage Manager software, after it is launched, the program
presents a window to start discovery of the attached devices automatically.
b. Select OK to initiate an automatic discovery.
If the DS3500 storage subsystem does not appear after this action, check the network
connectivity to both default IP addresses of the storage subsystem using the ping
command. Consider that each time a network cable is plugged to an Ethernet port of a
controller, it detects the linkup and initiates a request for a dynamic address. If it did not
find one, it assigns the default IP address. If you try to connect to the storage during
that time, you may receive an error, so we recommend waiting at least 5 minutes after
plugging in the cable to attempt either the automatic discovery or to manually add the
controller IP addresses.
Note: We recommend that you do not connect second Ethernet ports to LAN, and to keep
default IP addresses on them for service personnel, who can attach an own isolated
Ethernet switch if needed.
Tip: Before starting the automatic discovery or adding the DS3500 storage
subsystem manually, wait for the controller to finish its boot process and then
another 5 minutes after connecting the network cable to allow for the DHCP process
to complete. If this process is interrupted unexpectedly, controller can assign IP
addresses 0.0.0.0 by error, and you must reboot storage subsystem to repeat
procedure again.
