Chapter 18 PPP Authentication

18 PPP Authentication
18.1 Overview
PPP Protocol Overview
Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) is well documented in RFC 1661. It currently remains a popular solution for
dial-up Internet connections, including ISDN. PPP is a layered protocol that starts with a Link Control
Protocol (LCP) for link establishment, configuration and testing.
Once the Link Control Protocol is initialized, PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) and CHAP
(Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol) are used to authenticate the user to the network server.
One or more Network Control Protocols (NCPs) can be used to transport traffic. The IP Control Protocol
(IPCP), permits the transport of IP packets over a PPP link.
Here are some key PPP features, all of which are lacking in SLIP:
Multiple Protocols can interoperate on the same link, simply by running additional NCPs. For
example, both IP and IPX traffic can share a PPP link. The Loop-IP6100 supports both IPCP and
BCP (Bridge Carrying Packets.)
Link Monitoring facilities include a link-level echo facility which can periodically check link
operation.
The illustration diagram below shows two IP6610s. One is set up as the server and the other is setup as the
client. Data transported between two IP6610s, PPP function is enabled.
