Definition of the gray zone
The 'grey zone' is defined in relation to the EOL, performance characteristics, and
detector. The 'gray zone' arises when 3.3 kΩ or 4.7 kΩ resistors are used as the
end-of-line and the line resistance does not satisfy the specifications required
(R
L
<250 Ω).
The result of a 'gray zone' is that the ↑ line driver can no longer reliably recognize
an alarming detector as the line resistance is too high.
● Faults are not detected.
● Alarms result in an incorrect alarm message if any message is output at all.
To prevent the 'gray zone' occurring, the end-of-line element (3.3 kΩ or 4.7 kΩ)
must be replaced by an EOL22 (Ex). This makes line resistance monitoring
possible. As soon as the line resistance does not satisfy the specifications
required, a fault message appears.
