2.Mountthesteeringcylindersecurelyinavisebyclampingonthebarrel
clevis.Useaviseequippedwithsoftjaws.
3.Useaspannerwrenchtoloosenandremovetheexternalcollarsfromboth
endsofthebarrel.
4.Useatwistingandpullingmotiontocarefullyextracttherearheadfrom
thebarrelandrearrod.
5.Holdtheendofthefrontrodanduseatwistingandpullingmotiontocarefully
extractthefrontrod,fronthead,piston,andrearrodassemblyfromthebarrel.
6.Removethecylinderbarrelfromthevise.
IMPORTANT
Whenremovingtherollpinfromthefrontandrearrods,ensurethat
therodsurfacesarenotdamaged.
7.Removeanddiscardtherollpin(item6inFigure148)thatsecuresthefront
rodtotherearrod.Then,removetherearrod,pistonassembly,andfront
headfromthefrontrod.
8.Removeanddiscardtheseals,O-rings,andwearringfromthepistonand
heads.
InspectingtheSteeringCylinder
CAUTION
Useeyeprotectionsuchasgoggleswhenusingcompressedair.
1.Washallthecylindercomponentsincleansolventanddrythemwith
compressedair.
2.Inspecttheinternalsurfaceofthebarrelfordeepscratches,out-of-roundness,
andbending.
3.Inspectthehead,rods,andpistonforexcessivepitting,scoring,andwear.
4.Checkthere-phasingvalveinthepistonthatexiststoallowsynchronization
ofthefrontandrearsteeringcylinders.Thepoppetvalvesshouldnotbe
stuckinpiston.Ifthevalvesarestuckordamaged,replacethesteering
cylinderbecausethepistonisnotavailableseparately.
5.Replacethesteeringcylinderiftheinternalcomponentsarewornor
damaged.
AssemblingtheSteeringCylinder
1.Useanewsealkitandreplacealltheseals,O-rings,andwearringtothe
pistonandheads.Applycleanhydraulicuidtoallthesealkitcomponents
beforeyouinstallthem.
Note:Donotdamagetheheadsealsduringinstallation.
2.Installthefronthead(item15inFigure148)withnewsealsontothefront
rod(item12).
