USING A SOLAR POWERED OPERATOR
Using a Solar Powered Operator
Solar panels are NOT included in
the purchase of the Kinec DCS 15
[Kinec 1S] and 10F [Kinec 2S]
operators. Also, adapng a standard
Kinec DC operator to a solar
applicaon is not recommended.
For ease of installaon and proper
funconality, be sure to order a
solar model, Kinec DCS, for a solar-
powered site.
1. Use 14-gauge wire or larger to connect the
solar panel(s) within 100 of the operator.
Check NEC and local regulaons if other
distances apply.
2. Use one 24VDC solar panel or two 12VDC
solar panels in series with a total capacity of
at least 20W. Mount them according to the
manufacturers installaon instrucons.
3. Make sure both DC power switches on the
Kinec control box are in the OFF posion, and
then remove the two Phillips-head screws that
secure the 24VDC cover to the juncon box.
4. Wire nut or crimp bond the solar panel wires
to the black and red input wires. See “Figure
18. Solar Panels and Wiring Connecons” on
page 75.
5. Wire nut or crimp bond the equipment ground
wire to the green ground wire in the juncon
box.
6. Slide the plasc cover o the control box and
aach the red spade connector to the baery
terminal on the upper DC power switch. See
“Figure 19. Kinec DCS Control Box” on page
75.
7. Turn both DC power switches ON and program
the SmartDC Controller. See “Programming
the Inial Setup Menu” on page 61.
Wallace Perimeter Security oers a solar version
of the Kinec operator in 1/s or 2/s models.
The solar models have dierent internal wiring
and include soware programmed for solar use.
The SmartDC Controller has a built-in charger
which allows a 24V solar panel (or two 12V panels)
a direct connecon to the Kinec operator with no
addional electronic devices required.
To plan a solar-powered site, read through this
enre secon. Keep in mind that the solar
Kinec DCS operator does not have the following
components:
Transformer
AC power supply board
AC service outlet
Various wiring adaptaons that are standard
in a Kinec DC operator
Design Requirements and Consideraons
For extended baery backup
installaon instrucons, refer to
“Installing the Extended Baery
Backup Kit” on page 80.
