USING A SOLAR POWERED OPERATOR
Using a Solar Powered Operator
Solar panels are NOT included in
the purchase of the Kinec DCS 15
[Kinec 1S] and 10F [Kinec 2S]
operators. Also, adapng a standard
Kinec DC operator to a solar
applicaon is not recommended.
For ease of installaon and proper
funconality, be sure to order a
solar model, Kinec DCS, for a solar-
powered site.
1. Use 14-gauge wire or larger to connect the
solar panel(s) within 100 of the operator.
Check NEC and local regulaons if other
distances apply.
2. Use one 24VDC solar panel or two 12VDC
solar panels in series with a total capacity of
at least 20W. Mount them according to the
manufacturer’s installaon instrucons.
3. Make sure both DC power switches on the
Kinec control box are in the OFF posion, and
then remove the two Phillips-head screws that
secure the 24VDC cover to the juncon box.
4. Wire nut or crimp bond the solar panel wires
to the black and red input wires. See “Figure
18. Solar Panels and Wiring Connecons” on
page 75.
5. Wire nut or crimp bond the equipment ground
wire to the green ground wire in the juncon
box.
6. Slide the plasc cover o the control box and
aach the red spade connector to the baery
terminal on the upper DC power switch. See
“Figure 19. Kinec DCS Control Box” on page
75.
7. Turn both DC power switches ON and program
the SmartDC Controller. See “Programming
the Inial Setup Menu” on page 61.
Wallace Perimeter Security oers a solar version
of the Kinec operator in 1/s or 2/s models.
The solar models have dierent internal wiring
and include soware programmed for solar use.
The SmartDC Controller has a built-in charger
which allows a 24V solar panel (or two 12V panels)
a direct connecon to the Kinec operator with no
addional electronic devices required.
To plan a solar-powered site, read through this
enre secon. Keep in mind that the solar
Kinec DCS operator does not have the following
components:
• Transformer
• AC power supply board
• AC service outlet
• Various wiring adaptaons that are standard
in a Kinec DC operator
Design Requirements and Consideraons

installaon instrucons, refer to
“Installing the Extended Baery
Backup Kit” on page 80.
