Operating the H Cameras for Digital and Film Photography 51
camera body when the two are detached. The rear of the H camera body has a curtain to pro-
tect the fi lm in the magazine from exposure to light before and after the exposure is made. It
opens — moves sideways — when the release is pressed.
Removing a Digital Sensor Unit
There are only two reasons for detaching the sensor unit from H3D camera models: for cleaning
the outside surface of the IR fi lter and for attaching a fi lm magazine to the H3D (not the H3DII).
The sensor unit is therefore designed more like a part of the camera rather than a separate
component that is changed constantly as is done in fi lm photography. Removing the unit is
purposely made somewhat more diffi cult with a special locking device that is completely
hidden underneath the viewfi nder. You cannot remove the sensor unit without fi rst remov-
ing the viewfi nder. After the viewfi nder is removed, you will see a small black button on top
of the sensor unit. That is the locking device. To remove the sensor unit, push this small black
button toward the rear while pressing the center of the chrome button on the side of the
sensor unit toward the camera and to the right. The sensor unit is re-attached by placing the
grooves at the bottom of the sensor unit on the unit support on the camera body and fi rmly
pressing the top of the sensor unit toward the camera body. Re-attach the viewfi nder. Always
attach the CCD/fi lter cover to the sensor unit when it is detached from the camera. Do not
touch the infrared fi lter.
Magazine Settings
The fi lm data programmed into the fi lm magazine and shown on the display are transferred
electronically into the camera system with the necessary power coming from the batteries in
the camera when the magazine is on the camera. When the magazine is detached the data are
retained by the power from a small CR-2032 3 V lithium battery located in the bottom plate
of the magazine; you can see the battery cover after removing the fi lm insert. To change the
battery, insert a small coin into the battery cover and turn about 20 degrees counterclockwise
and insert the new battery with the polarity uppermost.
A battery should last one to two years depending on use. Because the power to an
attached magazine comes from the camera, the magazine works properly even if the maga-
zine battery is dead. The data programmed into the magazine, however, are not retained when
the magazine is removed from the camera. Figure 4-6 shows the magazine programming
controls.
Programming the Magazine Settings
Bar-coded fi lms marked as Bar Code System B or EL (for easy loading) automatically tell the
magazine whether it is 120 or 220 fi lm and what sensitivity it has. The bar-code symbol also
appears on the LCD display on the magazine (Figure 4-7). No settings need to be made but
the magazine must be set to Bar Code mode, which is indicated by a small B symbol on the
magazine LCD (see Figure 4-5).You can override the ISO of a bar coded fi lm.
