5.8.6 DIMM Installation Rules
l General DIMM Installation Rules
– Install DIMMs only when the corresponding CPU is installed.
– Do not install LRDIMMs and RDIMMs on the same server.
– 5.8.2 Memory Subsystem Architecture provides the DIMM installation sequence.
– When installing DIMMs in a memory channel, install DIMMs with more ranks and
then DIMMs with fewer ranks (starting from the slot farthest from the CPU in the
channel). For example, install quad-rank DIMMs, then dual-rank DIMMs, and then
sing-rank DIMMs.
– Install DIMM fillers in vacant DIMM slots.
l DIMM Installation Rules for Specific Modes
– Installation Rules for the Memory Sparing Mode
n Follow the general DIMM installation rules.
n The spare configuration of each channel must be valid.
n Different channels can have different spare configurations.
n Each channel with DIMMs installed must have a spare rank.
– Installation Rules for the Memory Mirroring Mode
n Follow the general DIMM installation rules.
n Install DIMMs in either channels 1 and 2, or channels 3 and 4. The installed
DIMMs must be of the same size and organization.
n For a multi-CPU configuration, each CPU must have a valid memory
mirroring configuration.
– Installation Rules for the Memory Patrol Mode

5.8.7 Installing a DIMM
Step 1 Wear an ESD wrist strap. For details, see 12 Preventing Electrostatic Discharge.
Step 2 Power off the server. For details, see 3.2 Powering Off the Server.
Step 3 Remove the power cables. For details, see 3.4 Removing Cables from a PSU.
Step 4 Remove the server. For details, see 3.3 Removing the Server and Guide Rails.
Step 5 Remove the chassis cover. For details, see 3.6 Removing the Chassis Cover.
Step 6 Remove the air duct. For details, see 3.10 Removing the Air Duct.
Step 7 Take a spare DIMM out of the DIMM box.
Step 8 Open the two fixing clips of the DIMM slot. See Figure 5-18.
