SEL occasionally may offer firmware upgrades to improve the performance of your relay. The
SEL-351P Recloser Control stores firmware in FLASH memory; therefore, changing physical
components is not necessary. Relay firmware is upgraded by downloading a file from a personal
computer to the relay via a serial port, as outlined in the following sections.

Personal computer.
Terminal emulation software that supports XMODEM/CRC protocol (e.g., ProComm
Plus™, Relay Gold™, Microsoft Windows Terminal™, Smartcom™, and Crosstalk™.
Serial communications cable (SEL-234A or equivalent).
Disk containing firmware upgrade file.

The instructions below assume you have a working knowledge of your personal computer terminal
emulation software. In particular, you must be able to modify your serial communications
parameters (baud rate, data bits, parity, etc.), disable any hardware or software flow control in your
computer terminal emulation software, select transfer protocol (i.e., XMODEM/CRC), and transfer
files (e.g, send and receive binary files).
1. If the relay is in service, disable its control functions.
2. Connect the personal computer to a relay serial port and enter Access Level 2.
3. Execute the SHO C command to retrieve the relay calibration settings. Record the displayed
settings (or save them to a computer file) for possible reentry after the firmware upgrade.
If you do not already have copies of the EZ, FZ, Relay Group, Logic, Global, Port, SER, and
Text label settings, issue the following commands to retrieve the settings: SHO EZ 1,
SHO EZ 2, SHO EZ 3, SHO EZ 4, SHO EZ 5, SHO EZ 6, SHO FZ, SHO 1, SHO 2, SHO 3,
SHO 4, SHO 5, SHO 6, SHO L 1, SHO L 2, SHO L 3, SHO L 4, SHO L 5, SHO L 6,
SHO G, SHO P 1, SHO P 2, SHO P 3, SHO R, and SHO T.
Normally, the relay will preserve the settings during the firmware upgrade. However, if the
new firmware version includes more settings than the old version, you will have to reenter
your old settings.
4. Set up your communication connection to the highest possible baud rate. The relay will
support speeds up to 38400 baud. Use the SET P command to change the SPEED setting to
the desired baud rate.
5. Issue the L_D <ENTER> command to the relay (L underscore D ENTER).
