How
the
Handpiece
Works
How
the
Handpiece
Works
The
handpiece
converts
electrical
energy
to
mechanical
energy,
resulting
in
vibration
in
the
handpiece,
and
from
the
handpiece
through
a
connecting
body
to
a
hollow
titanium
tip.
When
it
contacts
tissue,
the
tip
fragments
the
tissue.
The
conversion
of
electrical
energy
to
mechanical
energy
generates
heat;
a
cooling
system
reduces
the
heat
in
the
handpiece.

Electromechanical
Operation
The
CUSA
EXcel
console
provides
alternating
current
at
23
or
35.75
thousand
cycles
per
second
(kHz)
to
the
handpiece
(the
frequency
depends
on
which
handpiece
you
connect
to
the
console).
In
the
handpiece,
the
current
passes
through
a
coil,
which
induces
a
magnetic
field.
The
magnetic
field
excites
a
transducer
of
nickel
alloy
laminations,
resulting
in
an
oscillating
motion
in
the
transducer
laminated
structure—
vibration—along
its
long
axis.
The
transducer
vibrates
at
23
or
35.75
kHz.
