Mobile Backhaul Terminology
RAN CE — The generic term for mobile radio access network node or site, may include both
RAN NC and RAN BS
RAN NC — A RAN network controller.
RAN BS — A RAN base station.
RAN I/F — A non-Ethernet based interface between a RAN CE and GIWF.
GIWF — Generic interworking Function enabling a RAB CE with a RAN I/F to connect to a UNI.
These terms are illustrated in the example configuration in Figure 16:

3G UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service) systems comprise two main standards
areas, CDMA2000 and W-CDMA (other variants also exist). Although they are incompatible there
are investigations into providing interworking. The technologies breakdown as follows:
CDMA — EVDO, also known as CDMA2000, promotes a downstream rate of about 2 megabits
per second. However, high traffic utilization can degrade speed and performance so real world
speeds might be closer to half this speed.
GSM — EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution), promotes data rates of up to 384 kbps
(actual speeds reported 70-140 kbps). These networks are susceptible to interference. Next
generation GSM technologies include the HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access), also
known as W-CDMA offers speeds of 275—380 kbps (incompatible with CDMA networks).
