Data Speeds
A key objective for the 3G initiative is to provide faster data speed for data-intensive applications
such as video. In addition, to faster data speeds on a per-user basis, 3G is also makes use of greater
overall capacity for users, further motivating a carrier’s plan to migrate their networks from 2/
2.5G. A 2Mb/s target is a goal of the 3G initiatives, however actual data speeds will vary in
accordance with several factors including:
• Number of users in cell/sector
• Distance of user from cell
• Moving or stationary user
• Network capacity and network optimization requirements
• Synchronous vs. asynchronous operation
3G RAN Architecture and Deployment
The UMTS network introduces network elements that function as specified by 3GPP:
• Node-B (base station)
• Radio Network Controller (RNC)
• Media Gateway (MGW)
Figure 17 displays a general overall view of the technology comparisons highlighting the mobile
RAN.
