Data Speeds
A key objective for the 3G initiative is to provide faster data speed for data-intensive applications
such as video. In addition, to faster data speeds on a per-user basis, 3G is also makes use of greater
overall capacity for users, further motivating a carrier’s plan to migrate their networks from 2/
2.5G. A 2Mb/s target is a goal of the 3G initiatives, however actual data speeds will vary in
accordance with several factors including:
Number of users in cell/sector
Distance of user from cell
Moving or stationary user
Network capacity and network optimization requirements
Synchronous vs. asynchronous operation
3G RAN Architecture and Deployment
The UMTS network introduces network elements that function as specified by 3GPP:
Node-B (base station)
Radio Network Controller (RNC)
Media Gateway (MGW)
Figure 17 displays a general overall view of the technology comparisons highlighting the mobile
RAN.
