As shown in Figure 20, the Mobile Switching Center (MSC) components include the Radio
Network Controller (RNC), the Flexent Packet Switch (FPS) and the Application Processors
(APs). Uplink traffic originates at the Universal Radio Controller (URC) of a OneBTS. This traffic
is forwarded to the T-1/E-1 concentrator over discrete T-1s configured in Multi-Link Group
(MLG) bundles. The T-1/E-1 Concentrator concatenates the T-1/E-1s on a channelized interface,
such as OC-3 or OC-12, to the converged Multi-Layer Switch (MLS). The individual underlying
T1s are in unchannelized mode. The converged MLS terminates the MLG T-1/E-1s and forwards
the embedded IP packets to the MSC components. The downlink traffic originates at one of the
MSC components. If the traffic is from a BHS, it is forwarded to one of the converged MLS acting
as the default gateway. If it is from the FMM-AP it is forwarded to its directly connected MLS.
From the converged MLS the traffic is forwarded to the T-1/E-1 concentrator as MLG bundles
over the channelized interface.
The OneBTS and MSC components use IP packets to transport traffic to one another. The OneBTS
URCs, the MSC components and the router are considered IP endpoints for traffic routing and
have IP addresses associated with them. The IP addresses for the URCs and routers are manually
configured in the routers. The MSC components either derive their IP addresses from a control
subnetwork address or are manually provisioned.
