Rings: On single fiber endfaces, the rings identify the core,
cladding, adhesive, and contact zones. Figure 50 shows the zones
on a single fiber endface. On MPO endfaces, the rings identify the
core and cladding zones.

• The Core zone is the optical fiber. This area typically has a
diameter of 9 μm for single-mode fiber or 50 μm or 62.5 μm
for multimode fiber.
• The Cladding zone is the area between the inner, green ring
and the Core zone. The cladding is a layer of reflective
material around the core that keeps the optical signal in the
core.
