6.2.1.8 Feeding
Ration at the feed fence
First of all, the quantity of feed at the feed fence must be calculated.
This ration should be enough for the cows with a lower production. The
following rule of thumb can be applied: average milk production per
cow minus 7. For example, if cows produce 32 kg, the ration distributed
at the feed fence should be suitable for 32 – 7 = 25 kg. This rule of
thumb is based on average variations among cows in the herd.
Ration in the robot
Feed the cows at least 2 kg of feed during the complete lactation
period. In this way low yielding cows also stay attracted to the robot.
Start at day 1 of lactation with a minimum amount of 2 kg of
concentrates. Increase this amount in 30 days to a maximum of 8 kg. The
optimal feed speed depends on the milk speed of the cow and should be
set on 300 – 400 g/min.
