11.3 Handling modules
Nearly all the SINUMERIK modules have LSI chips. Owing to their
technology, these are very sensitive to overvoltage and thus also to electrostatic
discharge.
Modules using these components are identified on the component side by this
warning symbol.
ELECTROSTATIC SENSITIVE DEVICES (ESD) can be destroyed by
voltages and energy levels well below those perceived by the human body.
Such voltages are present even if a component or module is touched by a
person who has not undergone electrostatic discharge.
Components exposed to such overvoltages are not immediately recognizable as
defective in most cases since faulty behaviour sets in only after they have been
operating for a relatively long time.
