9.8.9.3 J1708 sniffer
TC-430™ integrates a J1708 sniffer utility which can be triggered by accessing “Setup
Interfaces setup
J1708
J1708 sniffer” (Figure 107).
Figure 107: J1708 sniffer
Basically the sniffer shows the count of frames received and recognized by TC-430™ as valid J1708
protocol frames and the number of transmission collisions detected (only the collisions which invole the TC-
430™ are counted, not the collisions regarding other couple of equipments).
In a normal scenario (J1708 cable properly connected and system working) the counter of received frames
should increase its value as long as some equipment exchange data over the J1708 bus. The number of
collisions may vary or not depending on the set of J1708 equipment available on board as well as their level
of conformance with respect of the protocol.
Counters can be reset hitting the “Reset” button.
The TC-430™ J1708 sniffer allows to “record” a trace of data exchanged on the J1708 bus. Hitting the
button “Rec” the recording begins. While recording, a blinking warning label is shown on the screen and the
right-most button is turned into “Stop” (Figure 108).
