Chapter 2: Installing Control 24 13
About Control 24 and
Ethernet Performance
This section presents some general Ethernet
concepts that will help optimize system perfor-
mance.
Control 24, Ethernet and Network
Traffic
If your computer is already connected to an
Ethernet network, moderate network traffic
(such as basic e-mail) should not affect commu-
nication between Control 24 and Pro Tools.
Refer to the documentation that came with your
computer or Ethernet hub for more information
about Ethernet networks.
Separate Zone Recommended for
Optimal Performance
Control 24 and its Ethernet implementation are
designed to operate while you are performing
general purpose tasks such as e-mail. If you are
using additional Ethernet ports for network
tasks while using Control 24, performance will
be improved by creating a dedicated server zone
for Control 24. Refer to the operating system
and Ethernet documentation for details.
Audio Connections
Control 24 offers a great deal of flexibility for
routing audio to and from Pro Tools, external
sources and sends, and multiple monitoring sys-
tems. Although audio connections are not re-
quired to control Pro Tools functions with
Control 24, various cables of varying degrees of
complexity are required to use the mic preamps,
analog submixing, send, return and auxiliary
routing, and control room monitoring features
of Control 24.
The Control Room Monitor section is capable of
handling a variety of control room setups, in-
cluding multiple sets of speakers, switching to
Mono or Dim modes, Talkback, and most typi-
cal studio configurations.
For more information about these configura-
tions and controls, see “Overview and Basics”
on page 55
.
Input and Output Overview
Audio is routed in and out of Control 24
through seven 25-pin D-Sub connectors on the
rear of the unit, labeled:
• Submixer 1–4 IN
• Submixer 5–8 IN
• External Source IN
• Pro Tools Sources IN
• Line Out to Pro Tools 1–8
• Line Out to Pro Tools 9–16
• Monitor Speakers Out
For optimal performance, create a dedicated
Ethernet network for Control 24 (do not
share the Ethernet port between Control 24
and other active network functions such as e-
mail or file transfers).
