Chapter 2: Installing Control 24 15
In considering these harnesses, you should de-
termine if Pro Tools audio interfaces will be ded-
icated to Control 24 inputs and outputs and
what kinds of connectors are required for the va-
riety of connections you want to make. For ex-
ample, 888-series interfaces, have XLR, while
the 882-series are hi-z 1/4” inputs and outputs.
The outputs of your Pro Tools audio interfaces
should be configured to match the input order-
ing of Control 24. The Pro Tools and external
source inputs are configured in stereo pairs,
which are selectable from the right-hand side of
the Control Room Monitor section.
Patch Bays
The most flexible routing setup is achieved with
a patch bay, in which the cable harnesses con-
nect to a more easily-configurable interface.
If the patch bay is “normalled,” you can create a
default routing configuration that can be
adapted as needed. For example, the micro-
phone preamps can be hard-wired to your
Pro Tools audio interface inputs, and the audio
interface outputs can be connected directly to
the Control Room Monitor section’s
PRO TOOLS SOURCES inputs.
About Stereo and Surround
Modes
Control 24 can monitor in Stereo (2-channel),
LCRS (4-channel) and 5.1 (six-channel) Sur-
round modes. The mode you choose will deter-
mine your input and output connection re-
quirements.
For stereo connection instructions, see “Con-
nections for Stereo Mode” on page 15.
For surround connections, see “Surround Moni-
toring Mode Connections” on page 21.
Connections for Stereo Mode
Control 24 can operate in either of two Stereo
monitor modes, Multi or (Single-Source) Stereo.
Single-Source is the default Stereo operation
mode. In Single-Source Stereo monitoring
mode, only one source input can be auditioned
at a time.
About Multi-Source Stereo and “Single”-Source
Stereo Monitor Modes
In Multi-Source Stereo monitoring mode (select-
able from the UTILITY menus) Control 24 lets
you listen to as many as all External and
Pro Tools sources simultaneously with the main
input sources (all inputs remain active until dis-
engaged). See Appendix B, “Utility Functions.”
The Surround formats mentioned in this doc-
ument require specific encoding and decoding
hardware or software in order to create multi-
channel mixes in a specific surround format
(such as DTS, Dolby Digital, Dolby Sur-
round (ProLogic) or others. See “5.1 Track
Layouts, Routing, and Metering” on page 52
for more information.
