Starting SpO2 monitoring on a patient
1 Admit the patient (see "Admitting a patient at the ICS" on page 108).
2 Turn SpO2 monitoring on, if not already on by default (see "Turning SpO
2 monitoring on/off"
on page 177).
3 Connect the SpO2 cable to the M300 (see "Connecting the SpO2 cable to the M300" on page 175).
4 Prepare the patient and connect the SpO2 sensor to the patient (see "Patient preparation for SpO
2
monitoring" on page 175).
5 Check the M300 Demographics screen to ensure that you are monitoring the correct patient.
6 Set the alarm limits at the ICS (see "M300 alarm ranges and defaults" on page 134).
NOTE
A functional tester can be used to measure the total error of a pulse oximeter monitor-probe system if a
particular calibration curve has been independently demonstrated to be accurate for that system. The
functional tester can then measure how accurately a particular pulse oximeter is in reproducing the cali-
bration curve.
NOTE
The M300 serial port cannot be accessed during SpO2 monitoring.
NOTE
Ambient light can interfere with pulse oximetry measurements if the sensor is not properly attached, caus-
ing erratic measurement or missing values. Observe proper sensor placement and cover the sensor with
opaque material if interference due to ambient light is suspected.
NOTE
To reduce artifacts, make sure the SpO2 sensor is properly attached to the patient, the patient is not mov-
ing, and all cables are properly connected.
