2.2.5 Redundant coupling of network segments with electrical and fiber-optic
components
General
SCALANCE X switches support not only ring redundancy within a ring but also redundant
coupling of multiple rings or open network segments (linear bus). In the redundant link, two
rings are connected together via two Ethernet connections. This is achieved by configuring a
master/slave device pair in one ring so that the devices monitor each other and, in the event
of a fault, redirect the data traffic from the normally used master Ethernet connection to the
substitute (slave) Ethernet connection.
