Starter Motor Removal and Installation

Removal
CAUTION
Prior to removing the starter motor,
disconnect the battery cables from the
battery.
1) Remove the PORT lower side cover.
Refer to “Lower Side Cover Removal and
Installation” in Section 2A (Page 2A-3).
2) Remove the ring gear cover and air intake silencer
case.
Refer to “Air Intake Silencer Case Removal and
Installation” in Section 1D (Page 1D-5).
3) Remove nut (1), positive (+) battery cable (2) and
positive (Gray) cable (3) from the magnetic switch
(4) of starter motor.
4) Remove the two bolts (5), negative (–) battery cable
(6) and starter motor band (7).
5) Remove the three bolts securing the electric parts
holder (8).
6) Remove the two bolts (9) securing the starter motor.
Starter motor running, but
not cranking engine.
Worn pinion tip. Replace over-running clutch.
Poor sliding of over-running clutch. Repair.
Over-running clutch slipping. Replace over-running clutch.
Worn teeth of ring gear. Replace flywheel.
Starter motor does not
stop running.
Broken contact point of magnetic switch. Replace magnetic switch.
Short-circuit magnetic switch coil. Replace magnetic switch.
