Hot-Plug Hard Drives
The following guidelines are to be noted when removing and replacing hot-plug hard drives:
■ Never remove a hot-plug hard drive if the LED icon is green. If several drives are used,
the system boot drive should be installed in the lowest-numbered bay.
■ Never remove more than one hard drive at a time. If the server is set in an array
configuration, and a hard drive is replaced, the controller uses data from the other drives in
the array to reconstruct data on the replacement drive. If more than one hard drive is
removed, a complete data set is not available to reconstruct data on the
replacement drive(s).
■ Never remove a working hard drive when another drive has been marked as failed by the
controller. Permanent data loss occurs. Hard drives that have been failed by the controller
are indicated by the amber drive failure LED icon on the drive tray.
■ Never remove a drive while another drive is being rebuilt. A drive online LED icon
flashes green when it is being rebuilt. A replaced drive is restored from data stored on the
other drives.
