Whentippingthewheelchair,anassistantshouldgraspthebackofthewheelchairona
non‐removable(non‐detachable)part.Informthewheelchairoccupantbeforetippingthe
wheelchairandremindhim/hertoleanback.Besuretheoccupant’sfeetandhandsare
clearofallwheels.
Tipping - Curbs

Aftermasteringthetechniquesoftippingthewheelchair,usethisproceduretotackle
curbs,shortstairs,etc.
Unlessthefirstassistanthasexceptionalupperbodystrength,itisrecommendedthatto
usetwoassistants.
Thesecondassistantshouldbepositionedatthefrontofthewheelchairliftingupwardon
thenonremov able(non‐detachable)partofthewheelchairframewhenliftingthewheelchair
andstabilizingthewheelchairwhenthewheelchairisbeinglow e redtotheground.
Thefirstassistantshouldstandonthesidewalkandturnthewheelchairsothattherear
wheelsareagainstthe
curb.Thewheelchairshouldbetiltedbacktothebalancepointand,
inonecontinuousdownwardmovement,therearwheelsshouldbepulledupandover
thecurb.DONOTreturnthefrontcasterstothegrounduntilthewheelchairhasbeen
pulledbackwardfarenoughforthefrontcasterstocleartheedgeofthecurb.
