4Starttheengineandrunitatanincreasedidlespeedforapproximately5minutesto
removeanyremainingairinthesystem.
5Checkthefuelsystemforleaks.

EngineWarm-Up
CAUTION
Idlingtheengineunnecessarilyforlong
periodsoftimewastesfuelandfouls
injectionnozzles.Unburnedfuelcauses
carbonformationandoildilution.NEVER
raceanengineduringwarm-up.
Enginedamagecanoccuriftheengineisnotwarmeduptoaminimumoperating
temperatureof77°C(170°F)beforeputtingthevehicleintofulloperation.
Heavy-dutydieselenginesaredesignedtooperateatoptimumefciencywhentheyare
runningloadedat(orverynear)normaloperatingtemperature,whereefcientcombustion
takesplace.Whentheengineisoperatedunloaded,lightlyloaded(i.e.,stop-and-go
operations,PTOoperations,orperiodsofextendedengineidling)orincoldweather
conditions,normaloperatingtemperaturemaynotbeachievedormaintained.Asaresult,
carbonand/orvarnishbuild-upwilloccurandlubricatingoilwillbecomecontaminatedwith
combustionby-products.
Coldweatheroperationsplaceaddeddemandsonadieselengine.Whenoperatingincold
climates(particularlyinstop-and-gooperations,PTOoperationsorperiodsofextended
engineidling),minimumoperatingtemperaturemustbemaintainedtopreventengine
damageresultingfromvalvevarnishingandcarbonbuild-up.
