CAUTION
Makesureairpressureisatleast620kPa(90psi)andunitisatoperatingtemperature
beforemakingrangeshifts.AlwaysstartinLOrange.Thisalsoappliestodynamometer
testing.Whenthetruckisstationary,doNOTshiftintoHIrangeandthenstartmoving
thetruck.Otherwise,damagetothesynchronizermayresult.
TheT310Misarange-shiftedtransmissionwhichhas10forwardspeeds.ThereisaLO
andHIauxiliarycompoundsectioncontrolledbyanair-shiftselectorontheshifter.This
compoundsectionisequippedwithasynchronizertofacilitateLO-HIrangeshifting.The
T310Mtransmissionalsoprovidesamulti-speedreversefeaturebymeansofreversegearing
inthecompoundcasewhichworksinconjunctionwithLO-LO,rstandsecondspeedgears
inthemainbox.Theair-shiftselectormustbemovedtotheR(REVERSE)positioninorder
toutilizethemulti-speedreversefeature.
LOrangeprovidessixlowratiosforsixforwardgearsintheT310M.HIrangeprovides
fouradditionalforwardgearswhichcanbeshiftedinthestandardmanner.Remember,
however,todouble-clutchwhenmovingupordownthroughthegears.Fornormalhighway
use,startinLOrange,rstgearandshiftthroughsecond,thirdandfourth.TheLO-LOand
LOpositionsinLOrangeforthistransmissionaredesignedforuseinoff-highwayand
slow-movingoperationssuchascurbpouring,materialspreading,heavyload/steepgrade.
REVERSEisusedinLOrangeforfourreversespeeds.
Upshift—Begininrstgear(shownas1/5onshiftpatterndiagram)withair-shiftselector
inLOrange.Upshifttosecondgear(2/6onshiftpatterndiagram)LOrangeinthenormal
manner(double-clutching).Whenreadytoupshiftagain,depresstheclutchpedaland
releasetheacceleratorpedalinthenormalmanner.Repeatthisshiftingpatternthroughthe
remaininggearsuptofourthspeed(4/8onshiftpatterndiagram).Whenmaximumengine
RPMhasbeenreachedinfourthgear,iptheair-shiftselectortoHIrange(preselect),
thendouble-clutchandshifttofthgear.AstheshiftleverpassesthroughNEUTRAL,it
willputthetransmissioninHIrange.Continuetoupshiftthroughnormalsixth,seventh
andeighthgears,whiledouble-clutching.
Downshift—Downshiftasnormalfromeighthtoseventh,sixthandfthinHIrange
(double-clutchingbetweenallgears).ThenextlowershiftwillbetofourthgearLOrange.
Whilestillinfthgear,iptheair-shiftselectortoLOrange(preselect),thendouble-clutch
andmovetheshiftleverthroughNEUTRALtofourthgear.ThemovethroughNEUTRAL
activatestheair-shiftmechanism,thistimetoLOrange.Thenextlowergearisthirdgear
LOrange.Double-clutchdownthroughtheremaininggearstorstgearLOrangeasneeded.
