EngineIdling
Idlingtheengineunnecessarilyforlongperiodsoftimewastesfuel,foulsinjectornozzles
andcanleadtovalvecarbonandvarnishdeposits.Unburnedfuelcausescarbonformation
andoildilution.Shuttheenginedownwhenprolongedloadingorunloadingofcargois
required.
Whenstartingacoldengine,orifthevehiclehasbeenparkedandtheenginecoolanthas
fallenwellbelownormaloperatingtemperature,afastidlespeedofapproximately1200
rpmshouldbemaintainedtohelptheenginewarmupmorequickly.
ShuttingDowntheEngine
StandardShutdown
Afterahardrun,allowtheenginetoidlethreeminutesbeforeshutdowninordertostabilize
thetemperatureofallengineparts.Quickshutdownscancauseenginedamageandprevent
theturbochargerfrombeingproperlylubricated.
CAUTION
Operatingtheenginebelownormal
operatingtemperatureforextendedperiods
oftimewillallowvarnish/carbondeposits
tobuilduponthevalvestemsandguides.
Thiswillcausethevalvestostickinthe
guidesaftertheenginehasbeenshutdown
andcouldresultinpushroddamagewhen
theengineisrestarted.Iftheenginehas
beenoperatedbelownormaloperating
temperatureforanextendedperiodoftime
(andtheodorofrawdieselfuelisdetected
orunburnedfuelcanbeseenattheexhaust
stack),theengineshouldbeoperatedunder
"load"untilnormaloperatingtemperature
isachievedBEFOREshuttingdownthe
engine.
