Shiftingatthepropertimewillresultinincreasedfuelefciency,aswellasadecreasein
costlyrepairs.Rememberthatoncetheenginefallsbelowpeaktorque,bothtorqueand
horsepowerwilldropoffveryrapidly.Beforethishappens,downshifttothenextlowergear.
Forvehicleswithtransmissionsthathaveextremereductiongearingcoupledwithhigh
rear-axleloads,atorque-limitingdeviceshouldbeused.Thisdevicelimitstheamountof
fuelthatcanbedeliveredtotheengineandpreventsoverloadingofdrivetraincomponents
whileinextremereductiongears.
Alwaysusethesamegeargoingdownhillasuphill.Thiswillreducebrakewearandprevent
damagetotheenginefromoverspeeding.
EngineTemperature
Beforeenteringhigh-speedtrafcconditions,allowtheenginetoreachnormaloperating
temperature.Anormaloperatingrangeisbetween77°Cand104°C(170°Fand220°F)for
stationaryvehicles
