Avoidsuddenstops.Constantsuddenstopsmaynegativelyaffectbrakingperformanceand
drivingparts.Whenslowing,leavetheclutch(ifequipped)engagedaslongaspossibleto
usethebrakingeffectoftheengine.
CAUTION
Whenusingthebrakingeffectofthe
engine,nalgearselectioniscritical.If
gearselectionistoohigh,thevehiclewill
buckwhichcouldcauselossofcontrol.
Shifting
Operateinagearlowenoughtoallowtheenginetoaccelerateto(ormaintain)governed
enginespeedwhenapplyingfullthrottle.Allowingtheenginetolugcausesexcessivestrain
ontheengine,whichcoulddamagepistons,rings,cylinderwalls,orbearings.However,be
surenottooverspeedtheengine.

Alwaysselectthepropergearratio
BEFOREdescendingagrade(toavoida
runawayvehicleandtostaywithinsafe
andlegalspeedlimits).DoNOTcoast
downhills.Gearratiosshouldbeselected
toallowtheenginetooperatebetween
peaktorqueandratedspeed.
CAUTION
Donotpermitaloadtodrivetheengine
abovegovernedspeed.Whendescending
steepgrades,uselowergearsandwatch
thetachometer.Overspeedingwillcause
severedrivetraindamageandeventually
destroytheengine.

Runningtheengineataspeedthatistoo
lowfortheload(orgradeoftheroad)can
causedamagetothedrivetrain.
