MAINTENANCEINTRODUCTION
Preventivemaintenanceisvitaltothelifeofyournewvehicle.ThissectionoftheOperator’s
HandbookcoversitemsofimportanceconcerningthepropercareofMACKvehicles.A
well-runmaintenanceandlubricationprogramisthebestwaytoensurealonglifeof
productiveoperation.
Theoperatorplaysanimportantroleinthepropercareofthisequipment.Byperforming
dailychecksandobservingtheequipmentwhileinoperation,minordefectscanbecaught
andcorrectedbeforetheybecomemajorproblems.Makesureanyproblemsarecorrected
beforeputtingtheequipmentintooperation.
Ifyouhaveanyquestionsconcerningthepropercare,maintenanceandlubricationofyour
vehicle,orifyouneedhelpindevelopingapreventivemaintenanceprogram,contactthe

Note:Thishandbookcontainsbasicmaintenanceinformation.Forcompletemaintenance
andlubricationprocedures,refertotheMaintenanceandLubricationManual.
TURBOCHARGER
Theengineturbochargeroperatesatveryhighspeed,temperaturesandpressure.Turbo
bearinglubricationiscritical,particularlyforanewlyinstalledturbooronewhichhasnot
beenoperatedforaperiodoftimeandalloilhasdrainedfromthebearingandshaftsurfaces.
Toavoidturbochargerbearingfailure,thefollowinginstructionsarerecommended:
Starttheengineatleastevery30daystoensureturbobearinglubrication.Operateengine
atlowidleforatleastthreeminutesbeforeincreasingRPMordrivingthevehicle.
Iftheenginehasnotbeenrunformorethan30days,turbopre-lubeprocedureis
necessary:
1Removeturboairintakeductandoillineconnectionatturbo.
2Filloilinletttingtooverowwithcleanengineoil.
3Usingngersatcompressorwheel,carefullyspinandwiggletheturboshaftto
distributetheoiloverallbearingsurfaces.
4Reconnectairintakeductandagainllturbooilporttooverow,connectoilline
andstartengine.
5OperateengineatlowidleforatleastthreeminutesbeforeincreasingRPMordriving
thevehicle.
