ADieselParticulateFilter(DPF)takestheplaceofthestandardmufer.TheDPF
isusedtomeetEPArequirementstohelpreducesootandparticulateemissions
intotheatmosphere.TheparticulatesareremovedbycollectingintheDPFunit,
wheretheyareeventuallyoxidizedwithpassiveregenerationoractiveregeneration
ofthelter.Theelectricalsystemandexhaustaftertreatmentsystemofthevehicle
willdeterminewhenregenerationisrequired.MackTrucks,usesconventional
exhaustaftertreatmentsystem.
Conventionalexhaustaftertreatmentsystemsusepassive-activeregeneration.The
passiveregenerationprocessoxidizestheparticulatescapturedintheDPFwhile
thevehicleisinoperation.Anoxidationcatalystraisestheexhausttemperature
toapproximately500–625°C(932–1157°F),thetemperatureatwhichachemical
reactiontakesplacetooxidizethesoot(activeregeneration)
Dependingonhowthevehicleissetup,regenerationcanoccurwhilethevehicleis
beingdriven(referredtoasa"moving"regeneration)orwhenthevehicleisparked
andidling(referredtoasa"parked"regeneration).
CAUTION
Whenactiveregenerationoccurs(witheithersystem),thetemperatureoftheexhaust
willbeelevated.DONOTparkthevehiclewiththeexhaustoutletunderlowhanging
overheadammableobjectssuchastrees,awnings,etc.,thatcouldbedamagedby
elevatedexhausttemperatures.DONOTremovethediffuser .
CAUTION
Ifthevehicleisinalocationthatmaybehazardouswhenanactiveregenerationbegins
(i.e.,incloseproximitytoammablematerialsorgases),theregenerationshouldbe
stoppedbypushingtheDPFswitchtothe"StopRegeneration"position.
Ifanactiveregenerationisstoppedbythevehicleoperator ,itshouldbeinitiatedata
latertimewhenthevehicleisinasafelocation.However ,ifanactiveregenerationis
stoppedrepeatedly,thevehiclemayneedtobetakentoaMACKservicefacility.The
servicefacilitywilluseaservicetooltomanuallyinitiatetheregeneration.
