Engine Temperature Sender Test
See Figure 4-38.
1. Park the mower safely. (See “Park Mower Safely” on
page 1-6.)
Label all wires before disconnecting to ensure correct
installation.
2. Allow the engine to cool completely. Remove the
engine temperature sender from the engine.

3. Fill a suitable container with engine oil.
4. Heat the oil to 100° F (38° C).
5. Immerse the sensing portion (3) of the temperature
sender in the oil.
6. Measure the resistance between the engine
temperature sender terminal (1) and the body (2).
Is the temperature sender resistance
approximately 943 ohms?
YES Continue with step 8.
NO The engine temperature sender is faulty,
replace the engine temperature sender.
7. Heat the oil to 280° F (138° C).
8. Measure the resistance between the temperature
sender terminal (1) and the sender body (2).
Is the engine temperature sender resistance
approximately 34 ohms?
YES The engine temperature sender is good.
NO The engine temperature sender is faulty;
replace the engine temperature sender.

To prevent burns, be careful when working with
hot oil. Do not hold the temperature sender with
your bare hands, always wear gloves or other
means to hold the sender in the oil.
