4.2 Roll Gap
Steel rolls condition the crop by crimping and crushing the stem in several places. This allows moisture to release
for quicker drying. The degree to which the crop is conditioned as it passes through the rolls is controlled by roll
gap. The roll gap is factory-set at 25.4 mm (1.0 in.), but it can be adjusted.
Correct conditioning of alfalfa, clover, and other legumes is usually indicated when 90% of the stems show
cracking, but no more than 5% of the leaves are damaged. Set enough roll gap to achieve this result.
A larger gap may be desirable in thick stemmed cane-type crops. However, too large a gap may cause feeding
problems. Grass-type crops may require a smaller gap for proper feeding and conditioning.
IMPORTANT:
It’s recommended that operators visually check the size of the gap if they are using settings below the factory
setting.
4.2.1 Checking Roll Gap
DANGER
To avoid bodily injury or death from unexpected startup of the machine, always stop the engine and
remove the key from the ignition before leaving the operator’s seat for any reason.
1. Lower the header fully.
2. Open the driveshield. Refer to 3.4 Driveshields, page 30.
