Units
Units
You can set the units for speed, depth and temperature. The units you set will
be usedto display all data, includinginformation received from other
instruments on the system. However, the distance units do not affectthe
instrumented range of the radar, which is always in nauticalmiles.
Variation Source
The variation value is the differencebetween Trueand Magnetic direction
datafor heading orbearing values. The VariationSource optionprovides soft
keysfor selecting Auto or Manual variationmode, displays the current
variation value for each and highlightsthe currently selected mode.
Auto Mode
If you select Auto mode, the displayobtains the value of variation
automatically, normally from received data. The variation value that is used
dependsonthedataavailable,andisselectedinthefollowingorderofpriority:
1. Variation valuefrom the same sourceas the heading data:
• Ifheadingdata isbeing takenfrom NMEA, then variationis also taken
from NMEA
• If heading is takenfrom SeaTalk, then SeaTalk variation is used
2. Variation value from a differentsource:
• If heading data is being taken from NMEA, but no NMEA variationis
available, thenvariation is taken from SeaTalk
• Ifheadingis taken from SeaTalk, but no SeaTalk variationis available,
thenvariationis taken from NMEA
3. A calculated variation value, using positiondata, if no SeaTalk or NMEA
valueisavailable
4. The currentmanual variation value,if no SeaTalk or NMEA value and no
positiondatais available
Manual Mode
If you select Manual mode, by pressing either of the MANUAL keys, you can
specify the local variationvalue according to the area in which you are
operating. Press the appropriateMANUAL key to adjust the variation up or
down, to a maximum of 30° East or West.
Thisvalue is then transmitted to any other SeaTalk instruments on your
system. It is retained if you turn the displayoffand on again.
In Manual mode, incoming NMEA variation is ignored. However, if the
variationis changedonanotherSeaTalkinstrument,thenewvalueisused and
themanual value that is displayed is updated.
Note: The Manual variation value defaults to 0°, so it is important to set up a
value if variation is not available from an external source.
