Unpackingonboardthevessel
Whenyouareworkingonboardavessel,an“approved
conductiveservicemat”isoftenfaraway.Asyoustillneedto
unpackcircuitboards,makesurethatyoudoitintheinstrument
room,oratanotherlocationwhereyouhaveasteeldeck.Keep
farawayfromthebridgeoranyotherroomswithwall-to-wall
carpets!Ifpossible,bringawristbandandgroundyourself.
Returningacircuitboard
Ifyouwishtoreturnacircuitboardtous,observethefollowing
rules.
Placethecircuitboardtobereturnedinthesameprotective
plasticbagasyouoriginallyreceiveditin-oraprotectivebag
ofsimilarESDprotectionquality.

O N O T usestandardplasticbags,suchascommercial
bubblewrap.
Fillinallthenecessaryinformationontheapplicable
documentationandplaceitinsidethebag.
Sealthebag.
Placethecircuitboardinasuitablecarton,andsecureitfor
shipping.
Note
Failuretofollowtheserulesmayresultinunserviceablecircuit
boards.
WhatisESD?
Electro-StaticDischarge(ESD)isthetransferofanelectrostatic
chargebetweentwobodiesatdifferentelectrostaticlevels,
causedeitherbydirectcontactorinductionbyanelectrostatic
eld.Thepassingofachargethroughanelectronicdevicecan
causelocalisedoverheating,anditcanalso“puncture”insulating
layerswithinthestructureofthedevice.Thismaydeposita
conductiveresidueofthevaporisedmetalonthedevice,andthus
createashortcircuit.Thismayresultinacatastrophicfailure,or
degradedperformanceofthedevice.
ESDprotection
Sensitiveelectroniccircuitboardsmustbetransportedand
storedinprotectivepackingbags.Thecircuitboardsmust
notbetransportedorstoredclosetostrongelectrostatic,
electro-magneticorradioactiveelds.Ifitisnecessarytoopen
andtouchthecircuitboardinsidetheprotectivebag,thenthe
followingprecautionsmustbetaken:
