Grounding
Allmetalliccablecoverings(armour,metallicsheathingetc.)
mustbeelectricallyconnectedtothevessel’shullatbothends
exceptinthecaseofnalsub-circuitswheretheyshouldbe
connectedatthesupplyendonly.
Groundingconnectionsshouldbemadeusingaconductorwhich
hasacross-sectionalareaappropriateforthecurrentratingofthe
cable,orwithametalclampwhichgripsthemetalliccovering
ofthecableandisbondedtothehullofthevessel.Thesecable
coveringsmayalsobegroundedbymeansofglandsspecially
intendedforthispurposeanddesignedtoensureagoodground
connection.Theglandsusedmustbermlyattachedto,and
ingoodelectricalcontactwith,ametalstructuregroundedin
accordancewiththeserecommendations.
Electricalcontinuitymustbeensuredalongtheentirelength
ofallcablecoverings,particularlyatjointsandsplices.Inno
caseshouldtheshieldingofcablesbeusedastheonlymeans
ofgroundingcablesorunits.
Metalliccasings,pipesandconduitsmustbegrounded,andwhen
ttedwithjointsthesemustbemechanicallyandelectrically
groundedlocally.
Cableconnections
Allcableconnectionsareshownontheapplicablecableplan
andinterconnectiondiagrams.
Wherethecableplanshowscableconnectionsoutsidean
equipmentboxoutline,theconnectionsaretobemadetoaplug
orsocketwhichmatchestheplugorsocketonthatparticular
itemofequipment.
Wheretwocablesareconnectedinseriesviaajunctionboxor
terminalblock,thescreensofbothcablesmustbeconnected
togetherbutnotgrounded.
Cableterminations
Caremustbetakentoensurethatthecorrectterminations
areusedforallcableconductors,especiallythosethatare
tobeconnectedtoterminalblocks.Inthiscase,crimped
sleeve-terminationsmustbettedtopreventtheconductorcore
fromfrayingandmakingabadconnectionwiththeterminal
block.Itisalsooftheutmostimportancethatwherecrimped
terminationsareused,thecorrectsizeofcrimpandcrimpingtool
areused.Inaddition,eachcableconductormusthaveaminimum
of15cmslack(serviceloop)leftbeforeitsterminationistted.
