3.8.3 Endoscope With Air/
Water System
See Figure 3-10.
Flexible gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopes have an air/water system in
addition to a biopsy/suction system. The air/water system consists of
two channels that begin at the air/water port on the light guide
connector. The channels extend through the light guide cable and
join in the air/water valve port on the control handle. The two
channels exit the air/water valve port separately and continue down
the insertion tube, where they may connect again, and exit at the
distal tip. Some flexible GI endoscopes have an air pipe which is
also connected to the air/water port.
Some gastroscopes or colonoscopes may have an auxiliary water
channel. The auxiliary water channel may be an independent
channel that starts on the light guide connector or the control handle.
The auxiliary water channel may also join the water channel in the
control handle.
