In the Fonts dialog, specify whether you want to embed fonts or sub-
set embedded fonts when the percentage of characters used falls below
a value you enter. If you’re using unusual fonts, or your layout is highly
dependent on the fonts, be sure to embed them. Choose the Subset
option when you want to embed a portion of a font’s characters. Don’t
use a low value if you expect to change any characters in the page. Read
about using fonts in Chapter 5, “Creating Output: Saving, Exporting, and
Printing.
In the Color dialog, choose settings that correspond with les used
in your source applications, such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. The
options available depend on the color settings you choose. If you are
sending les to a press, you often receive settings from the printer. Read
more about printing in Chapter 5.
In the Standards dialog, you can include an Acrobat 5.0 Compatible
standard for High Quality Print and Press Quality joboptions. Read more
in the sidebar “Meeting the Standards.
When you have nished designing your custom settings, choose Save
As to open the Save Adobe PDF Settings As dialog. Name the le and
click Save. The custom conversion settings le is saved with the extension
.joboptions.
Meeting the
Standards
The Standard, Oversized
Pages, and Smallest File Size
default settings don’t include
options to select an option in
the Standards dialog. In these
cases, not enough informa-
tion is stored in the file to
comply with the standards
requirements.
If you’re constructing
settings that comply with
standards, you can choose
options in the Standards
dialog that check docu
-
ment contents against stan-
dards before creating the
PDF document. The options
displayed in the tab vary
according to the standard
you select from the Compli-
ance Standard menu. Read
more about standards in
Chapter 6, “Complying
with PDF and Accessibility
Standards.
